Battery Storage: Your Shield Against Power Outages

Minnesota storms knock the power out more than once a season. A battery backup system keeps your fridge, sump pump, and a few key circuits running when the grid goes down — and your solar panels keep it charged back up once the sun’s out again.

Minnesota weather doesn’t cooperate with the power grid. Ice storms, straight-line winds, and summer thunderstorms take out lines every year, and if you’re on a rural feeder, you’re often one of the last ones back up. A battery backup system gives your home its own power supply for exactly those moments — no generator to drag out of the garage, no extension cords running through a cracked window.

How battery storage works

Your solar panels produce power whether you’re using it right then or not. A battery stores the extra you’re not using during the day and holds onto it for later — including during an outage, when the grid (and normally your solar inverter along with it) shuts off automatically. With a battery in the system, your home can disconnect from the grid and keep running on stored power instead.

What battery backup actually does during an outage:

  1. Keeps your essential circuits running:

    • Refrigerator, sump pump, well pump, a handful of lights and outlets — whatever circuits get wired into the backup, keeps running without you having to do anything.
  2. Switches over automatically:

    • When the grid drops, the system switches to battery power in a fraction of a second. Most homeowners never notice more than a flicker.
  3. Cuts down how much you rely on the grid, period:

    • Because the battery is charged by your solar panels, you’re pulling less from the utility day to day, not just when the power’s out.

Sizing and installation

Battery sizing comes down to what you want to keep running and for how long. Backing up a fridge, sump pump, and a few circuits is a different system than trying to run the whole house. We look at your electrical panel, your solar setup if you have one, and which loads actually matter to you, then size and wire the battery to match. Installation involves tying the battery into your panel, setting up the circuits you want on backup power, and configuring it to switch over on its own.
