The story-and-a-half Cape Cods and postwar ramblers around Nokomis, Armatage, and Victory in the Camden area went up fast in the 1940s and 50s and tend to have clean rooflines with good south exposure. Linden Hills, Fulton, and Tangletown mix eras and roof shapes, with more dormers and hips to work around. Where solar produces best in Minneapolis

The best producers we see in Minneapolis are the postwar blocks in the southwest and far south of the city, places like Armatage, Kenny, and the Nokomis neighborhoods, where ramblers and Cape Cods sit on wide east-west streets with long south-facing roof planes. Northeast Minneapolis does well too. Neighborhoods like Waite Park and Audubon Park were platted on a tight grid, so a lot of gable roofs face square south, and the boulevard trees there are often younger or set far enough from the house. Newer construction in the North Loop and along the river usually has flat roofs, which we can rack at an ideal tilt regardless of which way the building faces.

Plenty of Minneapolis roofs are harder: century-old canopy in Linden Hills and Tangletown, dormers and hips chopping up the roof, a neighbor’s silver maple hanging over the south face. We design around it. Microinverters or optimizers on every panel mean one shaded module doesn’t drag down the rest, and we’ll split an array across two or three roof planes when that beats forcing it onto one. Ground mounts are rare in the city, lots are just too tight, so the honest answer is careful shade modeling and panel-level electronics. If the numbers don’t work, we’ll tell you.
