Two things changed the math in 2026, so read anything older with care. First, the 30% federal residential clean energy credit (§25D) ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025 — homeowners who buy solar or a battery now don’t get a federal tax credit. Second, Minnesota adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code for permits filed on or after August 17, 2026. Every page linked below has been reviewed against those changes. How much do solar panels cost in Minnesota?
National price trackers put Minnesota residential solar around $3.00–$3.25 per watt before incentives, so a 10 kW system lands near $30,000–$32,500. With no federal homeowner credit, cash payback typically runs about 10–16 years. These pages show the math.

The PUC’s June 24, 2026 order (Docket 24-320) approved about 2.3% for 2025 plus 3.4% for 2026; time-of-use pricing is rolling out with smart meters.
Minnesota solar incentives & rebates
The federal homeowner credit is gone, but Minnesota incentives are not. Xcel’s standard Solar*Rewards currently pays $0.05 per kWh your system produces for 10 years (systems up to 40 kW, sized to 120% of usage or less, limited capacity — we confirm at quote). Income-qualified households can get $3.00 per watt up front. Solar equipment is exempt from Minnesota sales tax, and the added value is exempt from property tax.

Homeowner-owned systems no longer qualify. Businesses, farms, nonprofits and lessors can still use the commercial §48E credit — talk to your tax advisor.
Solar financing options in Minnesota
iSolar is ownership-first: most customers pay cash or use a solar loan. For cash jobs we collect a 5% deposit ($1,200 minimum), then of the remaining balance 50% at permit and interconnection approval, 30% after install, 10% after passed electrical inspection and 10% after permission to operate. Avoid loans with hidden dealer fees.

Home battery backup in Minnesota
Under Xcel’s monthly net metering a battery saves little on the bill — its real value is keeping lights, the furnace and the sump pump running in an outage, plus shifting energy if you move to time-of-use rates. Xcel’s battery incentive is about $175/kWh up to $5,000 ($370/kWh for income-qualified customers).

EV charger installation & electrical upgrades

The federal §30C EV charger credit ended for property placed in service after June 30, 2026, and Minnesota permits filed on or after August 17, 2026 follow the 2026 NEC.

Commercial & farm solar in Minnesota
Businesses, farms, schools and nonprofits can still claim the 30% §48E investment tax credit, but projects that begin construction after July 4, 2026 must be placed in service by December 31, 2027. Depreciation rules also changed: P.L. 119-21 changed solar’s MACRS class for projects beginning construction after 2024, and 100% bonus depreciation was restored for property acquired after January 19, 2025 — have your CPA confirm how it applies to you.

Questions to ask any solar installer
Ask every company you’re considering — including us — and get the answers in writing.
- Who will actually be on my roof — your own employees or a subcontractor — and who is the licensed master electrician on the permit?
- What is your Minnesota electrical contractor license number, and can I look it up on the DLI site?
- What annual production (kWh) are you estimating, and what shading, tilt and azimuth assumptions is it based on?
- What is the total price, the price per watt, and does the loan amount include any dealer fee?
- Which incentives are in your numbers, and are any of them capacity-limited or not yet approved?
- Does your proposal assume a federal tax credit? (For homeowner-owned systems installed now, it shouldn’t.)
- Can my electrical panel take the backfeed, or will I need a panel upgrade or line-side tap — and is that priced in?
- What happens to my roof warranty, and how are penetrations flashed and sealed?
- What workmanship warranty do you offer, who backs it if you close, and is it transferable if I sell?
- When are payments due, and how much is collected before permits and interconnection are approved?
- Who handles the permit, the Xcel interconnection application and the Solar*Rewards paperwork?
- Who do I call for service in year eight, and how do you monitor the system after install?
