Solar isn’t installed in a day — most of the calendar is paperwork and approvals you can’t skip. Here’s the honest timeline.
The install itself often takes only a few days. The full contract-to-power-on timeline is usually weeks to a few months, and most of that is waiting on permits, inspections and the utility — steps that protect you and the grid.
The real sequence
- Design & engineering — final layout, electrical plans, structural check.
- Permitting — your city/county building and electrical permits.
- Utility interconnection application — approval to connect to the grid and set up net metering. This is often the longest single wait.
- Installation — the few days of actual work on your roof or land.
- Inspection — the local jurisdiction signs off on the electrical work.
- Permission to Operate (PTO) — the utility’s final green light to turn the system on.
Why it takes what it takes
Each gatekeeper — city, inspector, utility — moves on its own schedule, and you legally can’t flip the system on until the utility grants PTO. A good installer manages all of it for you and sets honest expectations instead of promising an impossible date.
