The short answer: A SPAN panel is a smart replacement breaker panel that monitors and switches 16 to 48 circuits from an app. SPAN lists it from $2,550 plus installation, which is a full panel swap with permit and utility coordination. It works with Tesla Powerwall 3 and FranklinWH on all models; Enphase, SolarEdge and Powerwall 2 need the MAIN 32.
What a SPAN panel is
A SPAN panel is a smart electrical panel that replaces your existing breaker panel. It still has breakers and still feeds every circuit in the house, but each circuit also runs through a relay SPAN can monitor and switch on or off from the SPAN Home app. You see what every circuit is using in real time and in dollars, and you can turn loads off remotely or have them shed automatically.
That's the whole pitch. Everything else, from battery backup to avoiding a service upgrade, comes from that circuit-level control. This review is written from the electrician's side: what SPAN is good at, what it costs to put in, and how it pairs with the batteries Minnesota homeowners are actually buying. iSolar isn't paid by SPAN, and the specs below come from SPAN's own site.
SPAN panel models and specs
SPAN sells several versions, and your installer picks the model for your service:
- MLO 48 and MLO 24 (main-lug-only models).
- MAIN 40, MAIN 32 and MAIN 16 (models with a main breaker). A MAIN 32 can only be combined with other MAIN 32s in multi-panel setups.
- Control of 16 to 48 circuits depending on model.
- NEMA 3R enclosure rating, so it can go indoors or outdoors.
- Listed by SPAN as a UL 1741 power control system, the category that lets equipment actively limit loads or battery output.
- Needs an internet connection, with cellular backup where available.
- Homes with service above 200A may need more than one panel.
SPAN panel cost
SPAN's panel page lists pricing starting at $2,550 plus installation, taxes and shipping. Its homepage comparison uses $3,500 plus install, so the number depends on the model. The panel price is the smaller part of the story; installation is a full panel replacement:
- A permit and electrical inspection.
- A utility disconnect and reconnect at the meter for the swap, coordinated with Xcel or your co-op.
- Moving every existing circuit into the new panel, and fixing what the old panel was hiding: double taps, undersized wire, missing labels.
- Any service upgrade, meter base or grounding work the job uncovers.
Twin Cities quotes vary widely with the condition of what's already on the wall, so we price on site. A useful frame: if you already need a new panel because of age, a recall-era brand or a solar or battery project, SPAN is the upgrade cost over a conventional panel. If your panel is fine, you're paying for the full replacement.
Installer field notes before a swap
- Count your circuits, not your breakers. Older Twin Cities panels often use tandem breakers to squeeze extra circuits in. Make sure the SPAN model you're quoted can control the number of circuits you actually have, or plan which ones stay unmanaged.
- Map circuits first. SPAN's app is only as useful as its labels. A mislabeled 1970s panel turns into a mislabeled smart panel unless someone traces every circuit during the install.
- Check the wall. A smart panel is larger than many old load centers, and basement panels near water heaters or furnaces need code clearances.
- Plan the outage window. A full panel swap means the house is without power for part of a day.
If your panel is old, overloaded or a problem brand, our electrical team can tell you whether a smart panel or a conventional replacement is the better use of the money.
Pairing SPAN with Tesla, FranklinWH and Enphase batteries
Compatibility depends on the SPAN model. Per SPAN:
| Battery system | SPAN models | Required hardware |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla Powerwall 3 | All SPAN panels | — |
| FranklinWH aPower / aPower 2 | All SPAN panels | aGate or aGate 1.3 |
| Tesla Powerwall 2 | MAIN 32 only | Backup Gateway and Backup Switch |
| Enphase IQ Battery 3, 3T, 10, 10T | MAIN 32 only | IQ System Controller 1 or 2 |
| Enphase IQ Battery 5P | MAIN 32 only | IQ System Controller 3 plus SPAN Remote Meter Kit |
| SolarEdge Home Hub | MAIN 32 only (up to three hubs) | Home Backup Interface |
Why pair them at all? In Minnesota, a home battery earns little on your bill under Xcel's monthly net metering. Its value is backup. A battery alone usually protects a critical-loads subpanel or the whole house with no control over what runs. SPAN lets you back up the whole house and then decide, circuit by circuit, what stays on as the battery drains: turn off the EV charger and the electric dryer, keep the furnace blower, sump pump and refrigerator. SPAN says an internal study of 1,200-plus simulated outages showed about 40% more battery runtime; treat that as the manufacturer's estimate, not a guarantee.

Avoiding a service upgrade with SPAN
SPAN's PowerUp feature lets you pre-set which circuits get managed so the house stays under its service limit. Paired with SPAN's $750 Drive EV charger (48A, sold only as a SPAN accessory), it slows EV charging when the house is busy. SPAN markets this as adding major appliances without a utility upgrade.
The installer's caveat: whether an energy management system lets you skip an upgrade is decided by the load calculation, the code edition and your inspector, not by marketing. Minnesota adopted the 2026 NEC for permits filed on or after Aug. 17, 2026, and we confirm the approach with the inspector on each job. Cheaper load-management options exist for a single EV charger, so SPAN makes the most sense when you want several of its features at once.
Where SPAN shines and where it doesn't
| Strong fit | Weaker fit |
|---|---|
| You need a new panel anyway | Your panel is healthy and you only want monitoring |
| Whole-home battery backup with load control | A small battery covering a few critical circuits |
| Electrifying a 100A or 150A house in stages | One EV charger and nothing else planned |
| You'll actually use the app and circuit data | You want set-and-forget equipment with no internet dependence |
Two things to weigh honestly. First, the smart features depend on SPAN's software and connectivity; the breakers still protect the circuits, but app control is a company-supported product. Second, SPAN must be installed by a SPAN Authorized Installer, so confirm that before you sign a quote. Battery sizing still matters too; see our battery sizing guide.
Thinking about a smart panel and a battery?
Start with what you want during an outage and what you plan to add over the next five years: EV, heat pump, induction, solar. Then choose the panel. iSolar's battery backup team and electricians can lay out the options side by side, including whether a conventional panel with a critical-loads setup does the job for less. Frequently asked.
How much does a SPAN panel cost installed?
SPAN lists panels starting at $2,550 plus installation, taxes and shipping. Installation is a full panel replacement with a permit and utility reconnect, and the total depends heavily on what's already in your home, so get an on-site quote.
Does SPAN work with Enphase batteries?
Yes, but only the SPAN MAIN 32. It supports IQ Battery 3, 3T, 10 and 10T with an IQ System Controller 1 or 2, and IQ Battery 5P with IQ System Controller 3 plus SPAN's Remote Meter Kit.
Does a SPAN panel work without internet?
SPAN requires an internet connection for its app features, with cellular backup where available. The breakers still protect your circuits regardless, but remote control and monitoring depend on connectivity.
Can a SPAN panel help me avoid an electrical service upgrade?
It can in some cases. SPAN's PowerUp feature manages selected loads so the house stays under its capacity. Whether that replaces an upgrade depends on the load calculation and your inspector.
Is a SPAN panel worth it?
It's most worth it when you already need a new panel, want whole-home battery backup with circuit control, or are electrifying in stages. If your panel is healthy and you only want energy data, a monitor costs far less.
Does SPAN work with Tesla Powerwall?
Powerwall 3 works with all SPAN panels. Powerwall 2 requires the SPAN MAIN 32 along with Tesla's Backup Gateway and Backup Switch.
