Barnesville Public Schools — Ground Mount

The Project

In summer 2024, iSolar installed a ground-mount array for Barnesville High School — a great example of how Minnesota schools are using solar to cut energy costs that come straight out of education budgets, while giving students a real, visible sustainability lesson.

Why schools go solar: as tax-exempt public entities, districts can capture the 30% federal credit via elective pay (“direct pay”), and solar turns an unpredictable utility expense into a fixed, decades-long line item — freeing budget for classrooms. A ground mount sited on school land is easy to access and maintain.

Quick answers

How do schools afford solar? Elective/direct pay lets districts monetize the 30% credit even without tax liability; energy savings do the rest. Is it a distraction during the school year? No — summer installation keeps it out of the way.
