Snow on Panels: What to Do (Mostly: Nothing)

Every first-winter solar owner asks it: do I need to get up there and clear the snow? Almost always, the answer is no.

Snow on panels looks alarming and matters less than you’d expect. Here’s why, and what to actually do.

Panels shed snow on their own

Solar glass is smooth and the array is tilted, so snow tends to slide off — and once a sliver of panel is exposed, the dark surface absorbs sun, warms, and accelerates melting. A sunny day after a storm often clears panels within hours to a day or two.

The production loss is smaller than it looks

Minnesota’s deepest snow coincides with the shortest, lowest-production days, so the kWh you lose to snow cover is a small slice of your annual total. Net-metering credits banked in summer are designed to carry you through exactly this.

Why clearing them yourself is usually a bad idea

Climbing an icy roof is dangerous, and the wrong tool can scratch the glass or damage the panels — voiding warranties. The lost production almost never justifies the risk. If panels are reachable from the ground, a soft roof rake used gently is the only thing we’d suggest — never a shovel or scraper, and never on a roof you have to climb.

Where snow actually helps

On bifacial ground mounts, snow on the ground reflects extra light onto the panel backs — a small winter bonus.

Good questions

Frequently asked.

Will snow damage my panels?

No — panels are built for snow loads. It just temporarily blocks production until it slides or melts.

Should I clear snow off myself?

Generally no. The safety risk and chance of damaging the glass outweigh the small production gain. If anything, a gentle ground-level roof rake only.
